As a variety of corundum, it shares its mineral family with sapphire — the distinction being color alone. The finest rubies, known as "pigeon blood," display a vivid, slightly bluish red hue and command prices exceeding any other colored gemstone per carat.
Myanmar (Burma) has historically produced the world's finest rubies, particularly from the Mogok Valley. Today, Mozambique is a major source of high-quality rubies, and Madagascar, Tanzania, and Vietnam also produce commercial quantities.
